#1 Van Preparation: Vanasana Cleaning

After buying my van (a 2009 Peugeot Boxer H2L2), it's time to strip it down and do a big clean. The goal? To make the van shine and be clean for the next steps. The cleaning step is extremely important for what comes next, so it shouldn't be neglected.

My advice if you want to embark on the adventure: do not underestimate the time that this step can take. For my part, it took me more than a week to prepare everything. Here are the different steps.

  • Strip the vehicle
  • Clean everything from top to bottom

Strip the vehicle

The first step is to remove EVERYTHING that is present in the vehicle; everything that can be dismantled. For my part, I removed:

  • The roof rack
  • The partition wall (I removed it only for cleaning, and put it back afterwards)
  • Plywood on the vehicle walls
  • The floor

Clean everything from top to bottom

Once all the elements have been removed, you need to do a big spring cleaning. A good vacuum first, followed by a wash with hot water + vinegar. For the most stubborn areas, arm yourself with a scraper. Remember to bring microfiber cloths and sponges for this step, you will really need them.

Treat all rust spots present

Rust treatment is imperative to prevent rust from spreading to every corner of the vehicle. The good news is that it can be treated. How?

  1. Scrape off any rust with a wire brush or flap disc to neutralize it. It is completely normal for the paint to peel.
  2. Clean well and apply rustproofing to each surface. For my part, I applied 2 coats of FĂ©rose . This product is great because it has a double effect: it stops the proliferation of rust and it protects the arrival of new rust spots.
  3. For the last step, I applied 2 coats of white anti-rust paint.

Preparing the van for the next step

Once the layers of paint were applied, I degreased all the walls of the vehicle again for the next step: installing the openings (the skylight and the windows).
